Age and growth of the Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus brasiliensis) caught off northeastern Brazil were determined. A total of 831 otoliths were examined - 296 from males (12 - 75 cm FL), 212 from females (11.5 - 72 cm FL) and 323 from specimens of undetermined sex (12.4 - 75 cm FL). There was a high percentage of juveniles in the catches, resulting mainly from the use of gillnets. Marginal increment analysis of the otoliths indicated that the shortest distances from the last ring to the edge occurred from November to May, laying down just one ring annually. One to eight rings were found, with specimen lengths ranging from 11.5 to 75.8 cm. The Schunute model was used to determine what model was best fit the data, demonstrating that the specialized von... |

We determined the age and growth of the dog snapper (Lutjanus jocu), caught in the region of Abrolhos Bank, Bahia State, by the fishermen from coastal communities of Prado, Alcobaça, Caravelas, and Nova Viçosa. We examined 205 sectioned otoliths of fish caught by harpoon, longline, hand line, and gill nets (14.5 to 79.5 cm fork length). The formation of each ring was considered annual. The sectioned otoliths showed between 0 and 29 rings. Nearly half of the analyzed specimens had between 0 and 7 rings (88 of 205). Fish caught with nets in the estuarine region were the juvenile, while fish caught with lines and harpoons were the oldest. Two von Bertalanffy growth models were fitted to length-at-age data: one assuming constant variance of length-at-age (SVB)... |

Age is a necessary parameter used in population dynamics to assess the state of exploited resources. This parameter is poorly known for most deep-sea species (depth > 400 m). This work focused on age estimation from otoliths of Alepocephalus bairdii (Alepocephalidae), Coryphaenoides rupestris (Macrouridae), Helicolenus dactylopterus (Sebastidae) and Hoplostethus atlanticus (Trachichthyidae), which French fishery exploitation, off the west coasts of the British Isles, began the late 1980's. Considering otolith growth zones as annual, the four species all show high longevity: 38, 54, 43 and 130 years, respectively, together with slow growth. The differences in growth between sex were estimated and difficulties in accurately estimating the age were... |

To determine the existence of different population units of longtail hake (Macruronus magellanicus) of the Argentine Sea, the meristic and morphometric characters of 861 specimens from two different areas were studied measuring 24 body distances with the landmark methods. Besides, the relation among weight, width and thickness of 806 pairs of sagittae otoliths as a function of length and sex of individuals was analyzed. Using the General Linear Model, the Principal Component Analysis and the Multivariate Analysis of Variance the fitted morphometric variables, the meristic characters and their relation to the Area and Sex factors were assessed. The variability observed does not show any conclusive evidence about the existence of more than one stock in the... |

The technique of otoliths fluoromarking has been used to evaluate at a large scale the practices of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) stocking (540 000 - 570 000/year, most of them as sac fry) for three cohorts 1994-95-96 in a part of the River Doubs having a length of 40 km and fragmented in three zones (upstream, median, downstream) by three hydroelectric dams. For each of the three cohorts, there is a rather high contribution (23 to 60% according to the zone) of the stocked fry to the automnal 0+ standing population. The mass marking of all the stocked fry allowed to show that the dynamics of the contribution of the two components of recruitment (natural or stocked) differed. Indeed, the contribution of stocking decreased with time when measured in the... |

High abundances of juvenile fish in certain ports suggest they might provide alternative nursery habitats for several species. To further investigate this possibility, post-settlement growth, metal uptake and body condition were estimated in 127 juveniles of two seabream species, collected in 2014–15, inside and outside the highly polluted ports of the Bay of Toulon. This showed that differences in local pollution levels (here in Hg, Cu, Pb and Zn) are not consistently mirrored within fish flesh. Muscle metal concentrations, below sanitary thresholds for both species, were higher in ports for Cu, Pb and V only. Otherwise, fish muscle composition principally differed by species or by year. Juvenile growth and condition were equivalent at all sites. Higher... |

Dusky rockcod, Trematomus newnesi, is a widely distributed neritic circumpolar Antarctic fish species. We conducted a study on age and growth of Trematomus newnesi in coastal waters of Adélie Land in East Antarctica. A total of 289 specimens were collected in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2009. They consisted of 122 females, 132 males and 35 immature specimens. Total length (TL) and total weight (W) of these fish ranged from 13.5 to 25 cm and 19.7 to 174 g respectively for females and from 12 to 20.9 cm and from 24.1 to 144.1 g for males. The TL/W relationship was described by the following parameters: a=7.2.10-3 and b=3.127, showing no significant difference between sex (ANCOVA, P<0.05). Fish age was estimated by counting annual growth increments on polished... |

Somatic morphology and otolith shape were used to discriminate four samples of Atherina boyeri from three different habitats: Mellah lagoon (n = 269), Annaba Gulf (144 punctuated and 194 unpunctuated individuals) and Ziama inlet (n = 147) in eastern Algeria. For each individual, somatic morphology was described with 13 metrics and eight meristic measurements, while the otolith contour shape of 452 individuals from the three habitats was analysed using Fourier analysis. Then, two discriminant analyses, one using the 13 metric measurements and the other using Fourier descriptors, were used in order to discriminate populations of A. boyeri. The results of the discriminant analyses based on the two methods were similar, and showed that this species could be... |

Diversity among individuals in a population is an important feature linking vital rates with behaviour and spatial occupation. We measured the growth increments in the otolith of individual fishes collected on the annual fisheries survey PELGAS from 2001 to 2015. Individuals who grew larger at juvenile stage occupied later in life more off-shore habitats. Further, we analysed the allozymes of 13 different loci from 2001 to 2006. Alleles of the enzyme IDH showed different frequencies in inshore and offshore habitats. The population spatially segregates along a coast to off-shore gradient with individuals showing different early growth and allele frequencies. Results show how individuals in a population segregate spatially in different habitats in relation... |
